A Verdant City Escape—Changfeng Park, Shanghai 🌿

#shanghaionbudget

Strolling through Changfeng Park in Putuo District felt like stepping into a sprawling oasis right in the heart of the city. This 364,000 m² urban green space—built in the late 1950s—blends classical Chinese garden design with modern recreational amenities .

The centerpiece is Yinchu Lake, a large artificial pond surrounded by shady willow-lined paths and stone benches. It reminded me of similar lakes in Suzhou and Hangzhou, the water mirror reflecting both sky and skyline . I couldn’t resist renting a boat (about ¥69/hour), gliding past families picnicking and elders dancing to live music—it felt like a snapshot of community life .

Climbing Tiebi Hill—a manmade “Iron Arm Hill”—was a workout worth the view. At its summit, I looked down over the lake and the park’s lush gardens, noting how thoughtfully the park mirrors Ming- and Qing-era landscapes . The hill’s mix of flora and rocky outcrops made it a pleasant and scenic ascent .

Another unmissable stop is Changfeng Ocean World, located beneath the lake’s surface. Though ticketed (¥120–180), its tunnels and marine shows—featuring belugas, rays, and sharks—offer an educational and immersive escape .

Changfeng Park is open from ~5 AM (summer) or 6 AM (winter) until 9:30 PM in summer or 9 PM in winter . Admission is free, making it perfect for morning jogs, evening strolls, or weekend family outings .

Insider tip: weekdays are ideal to avoid crowds; if you enjoy boating or live performances, early afternoon is the sweet spot .
