✓ Susuruka, Susuranka.
This is a popular ramen shop hidden in the alleys of Naramachi, but it’s not your typical Japanese ramen—it’s Mapo Tofu Noodles. I’ve tried Chinese cuisine in Japan before at an izakaya in Osaka, and it tends to be on the heavier side. But isn’t that the essence of Mapo Tofu?
Don’t be fooled by the young chefs; they’re truly skilled. The Sichuan-style Mapo sauce and tofu are stir-fried over high heat, releasing an irresistible aroma. When mixed with the dry ramen, you won’t stop until the bowl is empty.
Luckily, I visited before noon and didn’t have to wait in line. By the time I finished eating, there were at least ten groups waiting outside. Wow, it really is a hidden gem in the alleys!
