🎓 Walking in Mao’s Footsteps at Hunan First Normal University

Tucked away near Nanmenkou Station in Changsha, the Hunan First Normal University Memorial Hall (毛主席与第一师范纪念馆) offers a meaningful glimpse into the early years of Chairman Mao Zedong. This historic campus, founded over a century ago, nurtured many of China’s great thinkers and revolutionaries — including Mao, Cai Hesen, and He Shuheng.

🕰 History & Highlights
Established in 1903, the school was known for combining Confucian learning with modern education ideals. Mao Zedong studied and worked here from 1913 to 1922, during which he formed his earliest revolutionary ideas. Visitors can even step inside Classroom 8, where Mao once sat — the desk and blackboard have been carefully restored to their original state.

The memorial features 14 exhibition halls, displaying photographs, manuscripts, and reconstructed teaching spaces that trace Mao’s transformation from student to teacher to revolutionary leader.
