Stop obsessing over Lhasa 😭 Chengde, this hidden gem near Beijing, delivers unbeatable value—90 yuan for a 1-hour high-speed rail ride from Beijing. Who wouldn’t love that?
🌟 Why is Chengde "better" than Lhasa?
Dubbed the "Forbidden City Beyond the Great Wall," it’s a treasure trove of imperial grandeur!
No need to trek to Tibet—here, you can touch golden rooftops of Tibetan-style temples.
Skip the peak-season crowds and explore royal gardens larger than the Summer Palace.
Best part? A weekend round trip is totally doable—perfect for busy workers!
🚄 Transportation made easy:
Beijing Chaoyang Station → Chengde South Station: 1-hour high-speed rail, 90 yuan.
20-minute taxi ride to downtown—stay centrally for easy access everywhere.
📸 Must-visit spots (with hidden gems):
▫️ Putuo Zongcheng Temple (80 yuan)
Mind-blowing! Standing on the steps gazing at the golden roof, you’ll swear you’re in Lhasa! This "Little Potala Palace," modeled after the Potala by Emperor Qianlong, is perfect for Tibetan-style photos—best light at 3 PM.
▫️ Xumi Fushou Temple (80 yuan)
The "Panchen Lama’s Palace" next door blends Tibetan and Han architecture. Don’t miss the glazed pagoda in the backyard—sunlight turns it into a golden spectacle.
▫️ Puning Temple (60 yuan)
The largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in the north! The 27-meter wooden Thousand-Armed Guanyin in the main hall is awe-inspiring. The rear garden resembles the Summer Palace’s Four Great Regions—less crowded, great for photos.
▫️ Chengde Mountain Resort (130 yuan)
The world’s largest imperial garden! Prioritize:
- Palace Zone: See the Hall of Mist and Waves where the Treaty of Beijing was signed.
- Lake Zone: Find the Rain and Mist Tower from "My Fair Princess."
- Hike to Erma Dao for a panoramic view of the Little Potala Palace (60 yuan shuttle optional; 1-hour walk also works).
▫️ Chengde Museum (Free)
Start here! Six permanent exhibits unpack Chengde’s history—double your appreciation for the sights.
▫️ Anyuan Temple (10 yuan)
Black glazed tiles for just 10 yuan! The Green Tara mural in the Pudu Hall looks freshly painted—super niche, barely any visitors.
▫️ Pule Temple (30 yuan)
The Xuanguang Pavilion, inspired by the Temple of Heaven, hides a stunning dragon-patterned caisson ceiling. Sunlight streaming through the skylight creates divine vibes.
🗺️ 2-day itinerary:
Day 1: Putuo Zongcheng Temple → Xumi Fushou Temple (they’re close, half-day) → Puning Temple → Chengde Museum.
Day 2: Anyuan Temple → Pule Temple → Mountain Resort (set aside most of the day).
🍜 Eat your way through Chengde:
✔️ Lamb soup: Topped with cilantro and paired with baked buns—comfort in a bowl.
✔️ Almond tea/ice cream: Locally made, light and fragrant.
✔️ Gaidao meat: Like jerky, pairs perfectly with rice.
✔️ Banmian: Wide noodles drenched in chili oil—add an egg for perfection.
💡 Pro tips:
❶ Temple combo tickets save money. Student discounts available!
❷ Book hotels a day ahead on weekends (chain hotels downtown start at 200+ yuan).
❸ If time allows, visit Hammer Peak for the epic "Giant Stone Pillar."
❹ Sunscreen! UV rays are stronger in the mountains.
No need to quit your job or save up—just grab your bag and go this weekend!
This "budget alternative"? I’m already on my way!
