Wenshuiyuan or Gonglindang is the best-preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu that was rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty.
It was founded during the Daye era of the Sui Dynasty (605-617), and was rebuilt in the 36th year of Kangxi (1697) and renamed Wenshuiyuan. In 1983, it was designated as a national key temple in the Han Chinese region.
Wenshuiyuan follows the typical Qing Dynasty architectural style, with six main halls including the Heavenly King Hall, the Three Great Temples Hall, the Main Hero Hall, the Sermon Hall, and the Jangkyung Hall arranged along the central axis. It is also considered the best of the four major Zen forests in the Yangtze River basin in China, and the Buddha's sarira and the sarira of Monk Xuanzang are enshrined in the temple.
Currently, Wenshuiyuan is a Buddhist religious space and a cultural attraction where you can experience meditation, tea culture, and calligraphy, making it a must-see for visitors to Chengdu.
