Chengdu Wenshu Monastery | The Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings stands majestically, protecting Buddhism with its majestic power

Behind the main gate of Chengdu Wenshu Monastery stands the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings. It is not only a vital guardian hall for Buddhism but also the first awe-inspiring presence that greets believers upon entering the temple.

Enshrined within the hall are the Eastern Dhritarashtra, the Southern Virūdhaka, the Western Virūdhaka, and the Northern Virūdhaka. These four kings, clad in distinctive armor and bearing solemn expressions, each wields a magical instrument, symbolizing the protection of the four directions and the upheld Dharma.
• Dhritarashtra, with his melodious zither music, represents the guardianship of the East and the bringing of harmony to the world.
• Virūdhaka, wielding a sword, exudes majesty and courage, symbolizing the elimination of afflictions.
• Virūdhaka, supporting a dragon and a snake, possesses a penetrating gaze, signifying a clear vision of all evil.
• Virūdhaka, holding a precious umbrella, protects the North and symbolizes the perfection of merit and virtue.
