Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, located atop Doi Suthep, was built in the early 19th century during the reign of King Ku Na Thammakaraj, the sixth ruler of Chiang Mai, to enshrine the relics of the Lord Buddha brought from Si Satchanalai.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a second-class royal temple, classified as a royal temple, and has been a revered landmark of Chiang Mai since ancient times. If you visit Chiang Mai and don't pay your respects, it's as if you haven't really been to Chiang Mai.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep features a seven-headed naga staircase made of cement, with approximately 300 steps. Alternatively, you can take the cable car up to pay homage to the chedi.
Inside the temple is a two-tiered, Chiang Saen-style chedi with a tall, bell-shaped base and tapering corners, covered in gold and gilded with jasmine. This Lanna-style structure, from the top, offers a clear view of Chiang Mai.
