ABOUT KALM VILLAGE
"Carrying on wisdom isn't something to do just once a year. It must be done all the time—with every breath. Like a flowing river: if the old water flows out but new water doesn't flow in, the river will dry. But if the old water doesn't flow out and new water doesn’t come in, it will stagnate. A river remains a river only when the old water flows out and new water flows in—constantly renewing itself."
— Revered Monk Jan Gusalo
Kalm Village is a center for art, craft, and culture nestled in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Old City. Our mission is to spark dialogue and collaboration across disciplines, generations, communities, and cultures throughout Asia. Through thoughtfully curated spaces, programs, and experiences, we invite people from all backgrounds—whether rooted in art and design or not—to engage with craft in ways that feel meaningful and personal.
The space is made up of nine houses, designed and built to celebrate and share stories of cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and traditional wisdom across various disciplines—from architecture and art to everyday objects and lifestyle.
The word “Kalm” is a play on the Thai word “Kham” (คาม), which means “village.” Kalm Village celebrates both traditional and modern Thai design. Much like a traditional Thai house, our space is made up of several buildings connected by a central courtyard—a gathering space for family and community activities.
From architecture and food to exhibitions, a library, lifestyle store, workshops, community-based programs and events, we integrate craft into everyday life, offering ways for everyone to connect—with the work, with each other, and with traditions that transcend borders and generations.
This is a pivotal moment for the future of craft. As many master artisans age and generational gaps widen, we see an urgent need to bridge the past and present. We hope our project can play a small role in preserving these invaluable traditions and wisdom while also reimagining them for today’s world—keeping them alive, relevant, and evolving for the generations to come.
