🙏Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is another ancient temple that has a legend that goes hand in hand with the history of the establishment of Chiang Rai. It was built during the reign of Phraya Ruean Kaew, the ruler of Chai Narai (currently Wiang Chai District).
📚According to the Yonok Chronicles of Phraya Prachakon Chak, when Buddhism was around 900 years old, there was a monk named Phra Phuttha Khosa, a native of Kosala, who traveled to bring the Tripitaka scriptures from Sri Lanka to the common continent and Bagan.
🌘On Monday, the 5th waxing moon of the 6th month of the Year of the Rat, 1483 BE, he traveled to Yonok Nakhon Chai Buri Sri Chiang Saen and presented the relics of the Lord Buddha to King Pangkharat. Phraya Pangkharat ordered it to be divided into 3 parts and given to Phraya Ruean Kaew. Phraya Ruean Kaew then built a pagoda, which is Phra That Doi Chom Thong, to enshrine the relics of the Lord Buddha. The other part was enshrined at Phra Maha Chin That Chao Doi Tung. The King of Phangkrat took the remaining relics to be kept at Doi Noi, which is now known as Wat Phra That Chom Kitti. 🏯Phra That Doi Chom Thong is therefore an ancient pagoda that existed before King Mangrai came to this area and established Chiang Rai City in 1815.
🏯Not only does Phra That Doi Chom Thong have an auspicious name, it is also a pagoda in the Lanna Bagan style, covered in beautiful gold. Every year on the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month, there is a tradition of bathing the pagoda.
🏘Another important thing in the area of Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is the 108 navel pillars of the city. The people of Chiang Rai worked together to build them to commemorate the kindness of King Mangrai and to honor King Rama IX.
🏘The 108 navel pillars of the city are located in the hypothetical form of the universe, which has been an ancient belief, facing east, surrounded by a moat. The inner part is raised up in six levels, representing the six heavens of Kamabhumi. Then lift it up another three floors. The top floor is comparable to Nirvana.
🏘 As for the navel pillar of the city, it is like Mount Sumeru, surrounded by 108 pillars, which mean important things in the universe. The navel pillar of the city is as big as five fists and as high as the height of King Rama IX. Chiang Rai people have great respect for this navel pillar of the city.
