Wat Phra Kaew, Chiang Rai
Located in the municipal area of Chiang Rai on Trairat Road, Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province.
Originally named Wat Pa Ya or Wat Pa Yea, as the temple was once filled with a large number of Yea trees, a type of local bamboo similar to yellow bamboo.
In 1434, the chedi of Wat Pa Yea collapsed on its own, revealing a Buddha statue covered in plaster and gilded. The statue was moved to the vihara of Wat Pa Yea. Later, the plaster on the ear of the statue chipped off, revealing an emerald underneath.
In the ubosot, there is the Phra Chao Lan Thong, a bronze Buddha statue in the Mara Vichaya posture, seated in the cross-legged position. It is the largest and most beautiful Buddha statue in the Pala art style in Thailand.
In the Jade Buddha Hall of Chiang Rai, there is the "Phra Buddha Rattanakorn Nawutthiwat Sanusorn Mongkol" or "Phra Jade Buddha of Chiang Rai," which means "The Buddha who is the precious gem, a commemorative blessing for the 90th birthday," in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra.
Open daily from 07:00 to 18:00.
