The name “Golden Triangle” originates from the region’s past as a global opium trade hub, where gold was used as currency to exchange for opium. Today, it symbolizes peace and prosperity, thanks to royal development projects that transformed the area into a cultural and tourism center.
The triangle is formed where the Ruak River meets the Mekong River, creating a natural border between the three countries. Historically, this was a strategic trade route and a melting pot of ethnic cultures.
