Lost Sleeping Moon Line

Alishan Mianyue Line Itinerary Guide

This time, my friends and I embarked on a hike along the Alishan Mianyue Line—a dreamlike mountain trail that blends railway history with natural wonders. Originally a timber branch line of the Forest Railway, the Mianyue Line, long discontinued due to disrepair, has now become a hiking pilgrimage, showcasing both wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. The 19-kilometer route, ending at the now-abandoned Stone Monkey Station, traverses 21 high-altitude bridges and 14 mysterious tunnels. The pristine beauty of the forest meets the marvels of human engineering, a journey truly worth experiencing!

Mianyue Line Highlights: Exploring High-Altitude Bridges, Tunnels, and Ultimate Forest Therapy

The Mianyue Line is truly a journey filled with surprises at every step. The first half of the Tashan Trail features numerous steps and ups and downs, requiring considerable stamina. The later section, which leads to the Moon Trail, offers more flat terrain. Be aware that you'll pass a large landslide, requiring you to use both hands and feet to cross. You'll then cross several suspension bridges, and some tunnels are dark, so a headlamp is recommended. The natural light between the trees is stunning, especially on clear days, when the interplay of light and shadow against the distant mountains creates a truly soothing experience.

Itinerary and Recommendations

🗺️Route: Alishan Sleeping Moon Trail
📍Address: Alishan Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan

Practical Tips & Highlights

1. Although the Sleeping Moon Trail is open all day, avoid entering the mountain in the afternoon. Darkness, fog, and a sudden drop in temperature can be dangerous.
2. The trail is filled with charming tree shadows and a constant stream of bird calls. Make sure your phone or camera has sufficient battery life, as the abundant sunlight filtering through the trees is perfect for photographing.
3. Although this is a popular trail, it's less crowded midweek, making it ideal for those seeking a quieter stroll. 4. The tunnel is wet and slippery, so proceed with caution and slowly.
5. It is recommended to bring plenty of water, snacks (chocolate, nuts, toast), and rain gear.
6. In the event of rain or earthquakes, some bridges may be slippery or closed, so be sure to check the latest conditions before departure.
7. An application is required to enter the Mianyue Line, and there is a daily limit. Details are available on the official website.

Conclusion

The Mianyue Line is absolutely a "railway adventure + forest therapy" itinerary. Whether you're looking for photography, exercise, or spiritual relaxation, you won't be disappointed!
