Moldova’s Landmark: Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity
Continuing my journey through Moldova, I arrived at the iconic building of the capital city, Chisinau, the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ (Catedrala Mitropolitană Nașterea Domnului). This magnificent cathedral is not only the spiritual center of the city, but also boasts a beautiful view.

The Metropolitan Cathedral was built between 1830 and 1836 and is a neoclassical building designed by the famous architect Avraam Melnikov. As I approached, my eyes were immediately drawn to its magnificent façade and high dome. The cathedral has a portico with six Doric columns on each of its four sides, giving it a symmetrical and magnificent appearance. Although it was damaged and repurposed during World War II and the Soviet era (it was once used as an exhibition hall), it was restored after independence and regained its original religious function and magnificent appearance, becoming the center of the Moldovan Orthodox Church.

When I entered the cathedral, I was overwhelmed by the exquisite and beautiful frescoes and the magnificent iconostasis. Although I am not a believer, the solemn and sacred atmosphere of this place made me cautiously walk, and I could feel the grandeur and beauty of religious art. The area around the cathedral is a large park area, which is great for walking, and you can also see the rebuilt bell tower and the nearby Arc de Triomphe.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ is not only an architectural treasure of Chisinau, but also a testimony to the faith and history of Moldova. For me, this was a precious opportunity to deeply understand the local culture and religion, and I could feel the intersection of history and faith.
