Recently completely captivated by Taiping Ancient City in Chongzuo, Guangxi! This ancient town blending historical charm with modern vibrancy perfectly embodies the concept of "a glimpse spanning millennia." Here's my freshly baked travel guide for you!
📍 Address: No. 2 Taiping Road, Jiangzhou District, Chongzuo City, Guangxi. Taiping Ancient City is surrounded by the Zuo River on three sides, shaped like a pot, hence its nickname "Pot City." With its excellent geographical location where mountains and waters embrace, the natural and cultural landscapes complement each other beautifully.
🚗 Transportation Guide:
- Self-drive: From Nanning, take the Nan-You Expressway (G7211) to Chongzuo exit, then follow navigation to "Taiping Ancient City" (about 10 minutes). The expressway offers smooth driving with views of Guangxi's unique karst landscapes along the way.
- High-speed rail: Take a train from Nanning Station to Chongzuo South Station (about 1 hour), then a 10-minute taxi ride to the ancient town – convenient for those who don't want to drive.
- Bus: Take a bus from Nanning Langdong Station to Chongzuo International Passenger Transport Center, then taxi (5 minutes) or take Bus No. 3 or 9 directly to the scenic area. Free shuttle buses run from Chongzuo University Town to Taiping Ancient City on weekends/holidays (17:30-22:30) every 30 minutes.
🎫 Ticket Info: Free entry, with some performances and experiences requiring separate fees (e.g., 10 RMB to climb the city wall for panoramic views).
🌟 Must-Visit Spots:
- Night views: When thousands of lanterns light up at night, the ancient town transforms into a dreamy "Guangxi version of Tang Dynasty's Nightless City." Best viewing spot is the second floor of Wangjiang Tower.
- Zhuang ethnic performances: Nightly cultural shows featuring powerful bronze drum dances and melodious folk songs – check schedules for exact times.
- Ming Dynasty City Wall: A protected cultural relic where you can touch ancient bricks and feel history. Perfect for Han/Zhuang costume photos at sunset (rental 30-50 RMB/set).
- Wind-Rain Bridge & Drum Tower: Iconic architecture with stunning lighting reflections and intricate ethnic designs – great for photography day or night.
- Cultural Market: Bustling with Zhuang ethnic handicrafts like brocade, embroidered balls, and bronze drums – perfect souvenirs.
🍱 Food Recommendations:
- Boji Banquet: Zhuang-style platter with tender chicken, grilled meats, sweet corn, etc. (about 50 RMB/person).
- Five-color Sticky Rice: Traditional colorful rice with plant-based dyes (10 RMB) – both delicious and photogenic.
- Grilled Pig Eyes: Adventurous local skewers (3 RMB each) with unique texture and special sauce.
👗 Photo Outfits: Highly recommend Han or Zhuang ethnic costumes (rental shops available with affordable styling services) to match the ancient atmosphere.
📅 Best Time to Visit: Pleasant year-round. Summer has shade and river breezes (bring mosquito repellent), while autumn/spring offer comfortable temperatures.
🏠 Accommodation:
- Inside ancient town: Taiping Ancient City Hotel (500-800 RMB/night) with traditional courtyard setting.
- Outside: Chain hotels like Vienna (200-400 RMB/night), 10-minute taxi ride away.
⚠️ Tips:
- Avoid crowds by visiting before 10am or after 7pm on weekends/holidays.
- Follow official WeChat for updated performance schedules.
- Wear comfortable shoes as some paths have cobblestones.
