On this trip, I visited the edge of Europe, Cabo da Roca! 🇵🇹🌊🌍
🛄 | The Sea at the Edge of Europe
Taking a bus from Sintra along winding roads for about 40 minutes—after crossing the hills, the vast blue horizon of the Atlantic Ocean unfolded before my eyes. This is Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent. A stone marker engraved with the words of Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, "Here, the land ends, and the sea begins," greeted travelers.
🌊 The Boundary Between the Vast Sea and Sky
Standing atop the cliffs, the relentless waves crash below, creating white foam. The wind was strong, but within its gusts, I could feel the scent of the Atlantic and a sense of freedom. The horizon stretched endlessly, and the blurred boundary where the sky and sea met gave the feeling of standing at the edge of the world.
🏛️ Lighthouse and Monument
On the hill stands the small Cabo da Roca Lighthouse (Farol do Cabo da Roca) with its red roof. Built in the 1840s, this lighthouse still serves as a guide for ships navigating the Atlantic. The area was lively with travelers taking photos against the backdrop of the sea and obtaining certificates to prove their visit to the "end of Europe."
🌿 A Walk Along the Windy Path
Around the lighthouse, there are short walking trails leading to the edge of the cliffs. Along the path, small wildflowers swayed in the wind, and beneath my feet, the endless cliffs dropped into the sea. The rough wind, the sound of the waves, and the vast ocean stretching below—at that moment, an indescribable sense of awe washed over me. 🫠
