A striking red brick building nestles in a modern alley, a must-see for visitors to Daegu. It's also a recommended tourist attraction by the Korea Tourism Organization and Daegu. Forty years ago, it began selling red bean bread, and now stands as one of Daegu's three major red bean bread hotspots. It also doubles as a cafe and a multi-faceted art and cultural space.
The initial attraction was its logo, featuring a gentleman resembling Sun Yat-sen and an image of red bean bread. Upon entering, a completely different world unfolds. The brick building's large windows let slanting sunlight filter down onto wooden chairs, creating a modern take on a traditional Korean house corner, creating a relaxed and inviting space. On the other side, retro booths lined with red velvet and accented with Ferris wheel lights evoke a popular Western restaurant from the last century.
The shop houses a collection of antiques, including a mechanical coffee roaster, an antique porcelain-topped coffee grinder, an old moka pot, and even Soohyungdang, a 1946 establishment known for its apple bread. The shell-encrusted gift boxes create the illusion of stepping back in time.
This is also a cultural venue, often hosting events. This week's exhibition features the work of Lee In-sung, a talented Korean painter who studied in Japan and is particularly known for his portraits.
