Yanmenguan: The First Pass of China

【Introduction】: Yanmenguan, located about 20 kilometers north of Dai County in Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, is nestled in the Yanmeng Mountains. It connects Datong in the north and Taiyuan in the south, situated at a mountain pass on the western section of the Hengshan Mountain Range at an altitude of approximately 1,700 meters. Serving as a crucial passage linking the nomadic civilization of the northern grasslands with the agrarian civilization of the Central Plains, Yanmenguan is renowned for its strategic and perilous location. Known as "The First Pass of China" and "The Foremost of the Nine Strategic Passes," it boasts an extensive array of military defense structures, including gate cities, sections of the Great Wall, fortresses, military outposts, and beacon towers, all meticulously arranged. Yanmenguan is steeped in historical anecdotes and legends. During the Warring States period, the famous general Li Mu stationed here for an extended period, repelling 100,000 Xiongnu invaders. In the Han Dynasty, generals Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, and Li Guang also engaged in battles against the Xiongnu here. In the Tang Dynasty, Guo Ziyi marched north through Yanmenguan to quell the An Lushan Rebellion. However, the most well-known stories are those of the Yang Family Generals, including Yang Jiye and Yang Yanzhao, who valiantly defended against Liao forces, earning a legacy of loyalty and heroism.

🕘【Opening Hours】: Generally open year-round, with slight seasonal adjustments to specific hours. Peak season tickets are priced at 90 RMB per person, while off-season tickets are 60 RMB per person. Discounts are available for those with valid identification. Note that the area features many mountain paths and steps, so comfortable athletic shoes are recommended. The mountain is windy, so bring a windproof jacket. If visiting in summer, take precautions against sunburn and insects. Be cautious when taking photos and avoid approaching dangerous edges.

⛺【Activities】: Visitors can climb Tianxian Gate and Dili Gate to experience the profound historical atmosphere, imagine ancient generals issuing commands at the Commanding Platform, stroll along the ancient Great Wall path to admire the magnificent natural scenery and the grandeur of the Great Wall, and visit attractions such as the Yan Pagoda and Zhenbian Temple.
