The Ancient Tea-Horse Road: A Journey Through the Dali Section in Western Yunnan

If you are interested in China’s ancient trade routes, the Tea-Horse Road is undoubtedly a place worth exploring in depth. This network of ancient paths winds through the mountainous regions of southwestern China, connecting the Central Plains with Tibet, and served as a vital corridor for the exchange of goods such as tea and horses in ancient times. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a section of the Tea-Horse Road in Dali, located in western Yunnan, and was deeply captivated by its unique and rich historical culture.

Walking along the ancient stone-paved road felt like stepping back into an era when caravans came and went, their bells jingling. The scenery along the way is filled with historical imprints—old houses built into the mountainside, stone walls, and wooden gates that speak of the passage of time. In front of a small clothing store, red couplets and a wooden signboard exude a rustic warmth, reflecting strong local character. Further along, an intriguing sculpture group vividly recreates a scene of a caravan taking a rest: people gathered around a campfire, some tending to horses, others resting. The lifelike statues almost seem to carry echoes of their conversations from long ago.

The Tea-Horse Road was not just a trade route—it was also a channel for cultural exchange. During my exploration, I noticed many details that showcased local customs. Stalls along the road sold local specialty products, displaying an array of exquisite handicrafts: indigo-blue tie-dyed textiles, owl pendants made of straw or bark—each piece a testament to the artisans’ skill and the unique ethnic culture of the region.

What impressed me most was a large stone tablet engraved with “概说” (Overview). The inscription detailed the history and significance of the “Dali Fengyang Section” of the Tea-Horse Road, transporting me back to those perilous yet vibrant times. This was not only a route for trading tea and horses but also a witness to the cultural exchange and integration among various ethnic groups.

Exploring the Tea-Horse Road was not just a physical journey—it was also a spiritual homecoming. It allowed me to intimately experience a long-sealed era and understand how ancient people carved out a path that connected the world across rugged mountains. This was a journey rich in history, culture, and human warmth, leaving me with a deeper sense of reverence and love for this land.
