Budget-Friendly Sri Lanka Itinerary (2 Weeks)

#cheaptravel #localguides #srilanka

Destinations: Dambulla, Kandy, Ella, Mirissa, Galle, Colombo (+Optional: Arugam Bay)

Dambulla (2-3 days)
Perfect for history lovers. Sigiriya Rock is the highlight, but it costs $35. Instead, consider Pidurangala Rock next to it for amazing views at just $3. It’s great for sunrise or sunset.
If you have time, you can explore Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa for more ancient ruins nearby. Also, Dambulla Cave Temple is worth a visit.
Optional: Go on a safari in Minneriya National Park. Yala and Udawalawe parks are popular but more expensive. Research and compare before deciding.
Tip: You can stay in Kandy and do a day trip to Dambulla to save time.

Kandy (2-3 days)
A larger city compared to Dambulla. First thing: Book your train ticket to Ella as soon as you arrive – it sells out fast!
Visit:
* Millennium Elephant Foundation (more interactive, you can bathe elephants)
* Royal Botanic Gardens ($10 entry, worth it if you enjoy greenery)
* Bahirawakanda Temple & Temple of the Tooth (go around 6:30 PM for the ceremony)
Optional: Ambuluwawa Tower for panoramic views – can be done on the way to Ella.

Ella (3 days)
Take the scenic Kandy to Ella train – it’s famous for a reason. If you're interested in tea, spend a day in Nuwara Eliya visiting tea plantations.
Top things to do:
* Nine Arches Bridge
* Hikes to Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock
* Explore local waterfalls
Ella is small, lively, and relaxing – great place to unwind.

Mirissa (3 days)
Reach Mirissa via Matara. You can stay in Mirissa, Weligama (best for surf schools), or Ahangama.
Top picks:
* Surfing (beginner-friendly waves)
* Coconut Tree Hill & Parrot Rock for great photos
* Doctor’s House Party (every 3 days)
Stay at least 3 nights to enjoy the beach vibe.

Galle (1 day)
Galle is only 1 hour from Mirissa. I stayed 3 nights – too much. 1 night is enough unless you love colonial architecture.
Things to see:
* Galle Fort (especially at night)
* Optional: Jungle Beach & Japanese Peace Pagoda

Colombo (1-2 days)
Around 3 hours from Galle. Visit in 1 day:
* Gangaramaya Temple
* Kelaniya Temple
* Lotus Tower (skip if you don’t want to pay $20)
Evening:
* Pettah Market or Aluthkade Street Food
* Sunset at Granbell Hotel Rooftop Pool
Before flying out, stay 1 night in Negombo (closer to the airport) if needed.

Optional: Arugam Bay (2 nights)
Great for surf & chill – but long travel time from Ella. I skipped it due to distance, but it’s worth considering.

Final Notes:
* Cigarettes are expensive in Sri Lanka ($8-10/pack) – bring your own.
* Exchange money before reaching Ella – worst rates there.
* Bargain when shopping or hiring transport.
* Use PickMe app for rides.
* Local buses are okay if you find a seat.
* For local food, ask for “less spicy”.
