The ultimate self-driving guide to Xinshi Ancient Town, the hidden gem of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai's ancient towns, is here!

Around Hangzhou, there’s actually a free, off-the-beaten-path water town! Xinshi Ancient Town is truly amazing!! Few people, beautiful scenery, and free entry—every snapshot looks like a Jiangnan ink painting! Here’s my secret guide👇

🚗 Transportation Guide
▫️ High-speed rail travelers: Hangzhou → Deqing Station 1h 💰30 RMB, then a 20-minute taxi ride (about 30 RMB)
▫️ Self-driving travelers: Navigate to "Xinshi Ancient Town Visitor Center" 🅿️ Free parking as much as you want!
▫️ Bus travelers: There are direct buses from Deqing Station but infrequent; taxi is recommended

📸 Must-visit spots (all free!!)
🌟 Juehai Zen Temple: A thousand-year-old Tang-style ancient temple, very spiritually powerful! A must-go for drawing lots and praying~
🌟 Xihekou Old Street: Ming and Qing dynasty buildings along the river, with bluestone slabs and small bridges over flowing water—absolutely stunning!
📍 Location: Core area of the ancient town
🌟 Canal New World: The nighttime light show is breathtaking! Plus, there are cozy little bars with great atmosphere🍸
🌟 Celebrity Former Residences: The former home of Qing dynasty painter Shen Quan is full of character, and the residence of electromechanical scientist Zhong Zhaolin is also worth a visit
🌟 Boat Experience: 30 RMB/person to cruise under ancient bridges, really feels like time travel! (The dock is at the visitor center)

🍜 Food Recommendations (Stuff yourself for about 50 RMB per person!)
🔥 Lamb Noodles: A time-honored noodle shop with rich broth and tender lamb! 25 RMB/bowl, great value
📍 Location: Entrance of Xihekou Old Street
🍡 Tea Cakes: Sweet and savory combo! Both Guangfuzhai and Songji’s are delicious (4 RMB/piece)
🍵 Tea by the Riverside: The riverside teahouse is super cozy, Anji white tea paired with tea snacks is perfect!

📌 Tips
❶ Be sure to wear non-slip shoes! Your feet will hurt after walking on the stone slabs for a long time
❷ Avoid holidays; having the whole ancient town to yourself is amazing
❸ Hanfu rental is 100 RMB/set, perfect for photos!

💡 Suggested Itineraries
⏳ Half-day tour: Xihekou Old Street → Celebrity Former Residences → Canal New World night view
⏳ Full-day tour: Juehai Zen Temple → Silk Culture Museum → Boat ride → Hanfu photoshoot

This place has none of the commercialization of Wuzhen or Xitang, only the purest Jiangnan charm~ Sitting by the river daydreaming and drinking tea is the right way to enjoy it! Bookmark this guide and find a quiet weekend to experience the slow life✨
