Panda paradise:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) A beautiful but bittersweet experience - worth a visit, but probably just once.
I had a really nice time at Panda Paradise and am glad I went. The pandas are absolutely magnificent to see up close, and the habitat areas seem very well-maintained and clean. It's a fantastic opportunity to observe these amazing animals.
That said, I left with slightly mixed feelings. As wonderful as it is, the experience ultimately sits in a bit of an ethical grey area for me. It's hard to shake the feeling that it's a very beautifully presented zoo. I'm comfortable recommending it for a one-time visit to see the pandas, but it's not a place I feel the need to return to repeatedly.
Highlights:
· Well-kept facilities
· Incredible, up-close panda viewing
· Educational aspects
Considerations:
· Has the atmosphere of a modern zoo
· May not align with everyone's views on animal captivity
Afterwards I headed to the large mall to see the bookstore. Honestly, it was a very strange experience. The place was almost completely empty, with many, many stores permanently closed. It has a real "ghost mall" feeling. It seems its primary purpose now is for people to take photos from the viewing decks with the scenic area in the background—and then leave. There's not much else to do.
Now for the food: There are a handful of restaurants open. The food is actually delicious, but it's challenging for a solo traveler. Most places serve very large, family-style portions. I ended up at a Korean BBQ-style grill which was fantastic, manageable, and really tasty!
Dujiangyan scenic area:
The real reason to come here is for the stunning Dujiangyan Scenic Area. Watching the sunset over the ancient irrigation system and then seeing the lights illuminate the river and temples is absolutely magical and worth the trip alone. It's breathtaking
Final Verdict: Come for the unforgettable sunset and night views at Dujiangyan. Pop into the mall for that classic photo op and a meal if you're in a group or find a solo-friendly spot. But don't expect a vibrant shopping or entertainment experience. It's a one-time visit for the scenery.
