Following the summer trend to take the kids to Dunhuang, I originally thought it would be exhausting to the point of collapse, but the kids came home every day flipping through photos and shouting, "I want to ride camels again!"
7 days checking in at grasslands, deserts, snow mountains, Danxia landforms, making thangka paintings, digging sand, chasing the Milky Way... The romance of Northwest China fully filled the kids' summer vacation💥 Personally tested this "relaxed parenting guide," just follow it and you can't go wrong!
D1: First Experience in Xining — Yak Bone Soup
Landed in Xining and headed straight to Xigege Yak Bone Soup🦴. The soup is as rich as milk.
The non-spicy broth is super friendly for kids.
D2: Qinghai Lake Pasture and Qinghai Lake Scenic Area
The teacher led the kids to paint lotus flowers🪷, and after finishing, they could take their paintings home to hang in the living room as a "household treasure"😆
D3: Cycling around Qinghai Lake + High-Speed Train Transfer
Cycling along Qinghai Lake, then taking the high-speed train to Zhangye in the afternoon, perfectly timed🫴
D4: Danxia Landform + Jiayuguan Zhangye Danxia Landform Tourist Area
The Danxia looks like a spilled paint palette, and the prehistoric fossils in the geological museum are huge—definitely meaningful to see🦕
D5: Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake🌙
Dunhuang Hanyun Hotel (Dunhuang Night Market Shazhou Market Branch) is absolutely amazing🏨! The Chinese-style architecture perfectly matches Dunhuang. The kids hugged camel plush toys to sleep, probably dreaming of riding camels🐫😏
Sliding down the sand dunes on boards during the day, the screams could shake the sand flying😂.
Mass singing at night: when the lights come on, everyone sings "Mohe Ballroom" together, the atmosphere is instantly electrifying.
D6: Mogao Caves Mogao Caves
8 caves plus special cave explanations, the flying apsaras murals are truly beautiful.
You can also experience a stargazing class where the teacher points out constellations, so romantic it brings tears to your eyes😢
D7: Return Trip
Tips for Traveling with Kids (Learned the Hard Way!)
1. Avoid self-driving: Distances between Northwest China attractions are huge, self-driving can exhaust the kids to collapse. Be sure to plan your itinerary and personnel arrangements in advance.
2. Bring full gear: Desert sun-protective clothing, sunglasses, and sand socks are essential;
Qinghai Lake has big temperature differences, so bring a light jacket👔.
3. Cultural enlightenment: Watch Dunhuang animations and picture books (like "The Nine-Colored Deer") beforehand for a better experience🦌
4. Food accommodations: Northwest cuisine tends to be spicy, so prepare some snacks and fruit for the kids🍉
