The Mogao Grottoes, also known as the "Thousand Buddha Caves," are located on the cliffs of Mingsha Mountain, 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, western China. Enjoying abundant sunshine year-round, dry weather with little rain, distinct seasons, and a significant temperature swing between day and night, the grottoes stretch over 1,600 meters from north to south, spanning five levels, with the highest point reaching 50 meters. There are 492 existing caves, over 45,000 square meters of murals, 2,415 painted sculptures, and over 4,000 flying statues. Mogao Grottoes are vast in scale, rich in content, and steeped in history. Along with the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi and the Longmen Grottoes in Henan, they are considered one of China's "Three Great Cave Art Treasures."
The site is under preservation, and photography is prohibited. However, the rich and priceless cultural heritage, including the murals and Buddhist historical relics, is breathtaking. The museum's special exhibitions are detailed, and the cave guides are professional and well-spoken, sharing their stories with eloquent eloquence. If you're visiting from afar, you'll definitely want to buy the highest-tier ticket to see more of the caves and museum. It's incredibly hot and sunny, so be sure to drink water and wear sunscreen.
