As the sacred site of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, Mount Emei's ethereal beauty and earthly hustle always evoke mixed feelings - we adore its sea of clouds, Buddha's halo, sacred monkeys and ancient temples, yet dread its winding mountain paths and unavoidable tourist traps. Having just returned from Emei, I've compiled this foolproof guide with hard-earned experience to help you avoid 90% of the pitfalls!
🌄 Route Options: For Hikers and Leisure Seekers
The mountain offers so many routes it's overwhelming, but trust me: unless you're a marathon runner, don't attempt the full hike (60km one way from Baoguo Temple to Golden Summit - you'll regret it).
Recommended combo:
✅ Essential hiking section: Qingyin Pavilion → One-Line Sky → Ecological Monkey Zone → Wannian Temple (~6km, follows streams with high monkey encounter rate)
✅ Leisure-friendly section: Leidongping → Jieyin Temple → Golden Summit (3.5km uphill hike, or take the 10-minute cable car directly to the sea of clouds)
These routes let you visit the 4th-century Wannian Temple (housing Samantabhadra's true relic) while encountering "bandit" monkey troops - a perfect blend of nature and culture!
🗺️ 2-Day In-Depth Itinerary (With Pitfall Alerts)
Day1: Golden Summit Pilgrimage
07:30 Take direct bus from Baoguo Temple Station to Leidongping (1h40min, motion-sick travelers sit upfront)
🚶♀️ Option A: Hike 3.5km to summit (steep but photogenic foggy fir forests)
🚠 Option B: Cable car (¥65/person, 5-minute cloud spectacle)
✨ Must-dos: Touch the feet of the Golden Samantabhadra Statue, watch sunset gilding the mountains at Sheshen Cliff
🏨 Stay: Leidongping homestays (¥200/night, 3x cheaper than summit; catch first 5am cable car for sunrise)
Day2: Cultural Hike
08:00 Bus from Leidongping to Wannian Station (40min thrilling mountain road)
🏯 Wannian highlights: Beamless Brick Hall (Ming Dynasty marvel), Bronze Samantabhadra Statue (Song Dynasty relic)
⚠️ Warning: Temple vendors sell incense sets from ¥20 - don't buy inside!
🐒 Monkey Zone Survival: No bag-opening! No plastic bags! No feeding (unless you want to be mugged)
15:00 Return via Wuxiangang Station, try the ¥25 Golden Summit noodles (pricey but delicious)
🏡 Accommodation Tips
🔥 Budget picks: Near Baoguo Temple (¥100/night with night market & hot springs)
🔥 Hiker's choice: Qingyin Pavilion B&Bs (¥150/night with shuttle service and creek views)
⚠️ Avoid: Summit hotels (¥800+, requires 4am wake-up for sunrise)
⚠️ Locals' Bloody Lessons
1️⃣ Carry ≤2 water bottles! Mountain water ¥5/bottle, instant noodles ¥10 - reasonable prices
2️⃣ At Wannian Temple, politely decline "helpful" aunties demanding photo fees
3️⃣ If monkeys block your path, retreat slowly - your snacks are their prime target
4️⃣ Leidongping cable car has separate uphill (¥65) and downhill (¥55) tickets - don't mix them up!
When you see the Golden Samantabhadra emerging from clouds, hear Wannian's ancient bells, or outsmart wild monkeys, you'll understand why Xu Xiake wrote "Only Emei's visitors truly witness nature's wonders." This guide may not be perfect, but it'll save you detours, leaving more room for your eyes and soul.
