🏯 History of Mount Emei and Its Temples
Mount Emei (峨眉山), rising to 3,099 meters, is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
It is traditionally regarded as the bodhimaṇḍa (place of enlightenment) of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (普賢菩薩).
The first Buddhist temple in China was built here in the 1st century AD, marking the beginning of Emei’s spiritual legacy
Over centuries, more than 70 monasteries were established, especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties. These temples are known for their unique architecture, often built on terraces or stilts to harmonize with the mountain’s dramatic landscape.
Mount Emei is also famous for its biodiversity, misty peaks, and the mystical “Buddha’s Halo” phenomenon seen from the Golden Summit.
