Swiss Jungfrau Observatory: Ice Palace

On this trip, I had the unique experience of venturing into a glacier at the Jungfrau Ice Palace! 🇨🇭❄️🧊

🛄｜The Ice Maze Inside Jungfraujoch
The Jungfrau Ice Palace is a massive ice cave located in the underground section of the Jungfraujoch station. It was carved directly into the glacier in the 1930s and is still maintained at sub-zero temperatures. Following the signs from the station, you gradually feel the cold air and notice the ground becoming slippery. It felt like stepping into an ice castle.

🌿 Sparkling Ice Sculptures and Glacier Tunnels
Once inside, you are surrounded by transparent ice walls. The floor, ceiling, and pillars are all made of ice, illuminated by soft lighting that casts a bluish glow throughout the space. Various ice sculptures of animals like bears, penguins, and eagles are displayed, making it feel like walking through an art gallery inside a glacier. The floor is smooth but very slippery, so walking slowly is essential. Despite the cold air, the clear and transparent atmosphere felt refreshing.

🏔️ The Breath of the Alps Inside the Ice
The most memorable moment here was observing the tiny bubbles and patterns within the ice walls. The layers of ice compressed over thousands of years conveyed a natural beauty deeper than any human-made art. The sound of footsteps and the faint cracking of ice in the quiet cave added to the mysterious ambiance.

1️⃣ Route – Interlaken Ost → Grindelwald Terminal → Eiger Express → Eiger Glacier → Jungfraubahn → Jungfraujoch. Follow the signs to "Ice Palace" upon arrival.
2️⃣ Temperature – The internal temperature is around –3°C to –5°C, so warm gloves and anti-slip shoes are essential!
3️⃣ Photo Tip – Use a camera or phone with adjustable brightness as the lighting is soft.
4️⃣ Time – It takes about 20–30 minutes to explore the interior at a leisurely pace.
