Day 5: After a light trek to admire the crystal-clear waters of Hokitika Gorge, we continued on Highway 6 to Ross, a distance of approximately 54 kilometers. The scenery on both sides was a mix of tall trees and lush green fields.

🪙"Ross" is a small town founded in 1860 during the gold rush, when people primarily came to the area to mine gold. From a bustling town, it has evolved into a city with a population of only 300-350. There are still many historical buildings remaining, including a hotel, a bank, an old gold mine, and a gold mine that has been turned into a well. We stopped to stroll around the town and visit a small grocery store in the quiet community. There were hardly any people walking around on the main roads and side streets.

Then we continued our journey. We drove through Kakapotahi, Pukekura, Wanganui Bridge, Harihari, Whataroa, and stopped at Lake Wahapo and Lake Mapourika. Finally, we arrived at Franz Josef, approximately 110 kilometers away.

🏔️ Franz Josef is a place where we can admire glaciers. However, it rained heavily the entire way, and the entrance to Franz Josef was closed for road repairs🚧, making it impossible to drive. We had to walk quite a distance, taking a lot of time in the rain and strong winds. Therefore, we decided to cancel this trip❌ and hurried to Fox Glacier, just 24 kilometers away. We arrived around 5:00 PM.

🏔️ Fox Glacier Town is another small town, covering an area of ​​less than 3 square kilometers with a population of only 200 people. Its main highlight is the Fox Glacier, which attracts tens of thousands of tourists each year.

We quickly parked the car, put on our rain jackets, and packed snacks and water to head out, amidst the light rain. The trail is gravel, with small and large rocks all along the way, about 7 kilometers long. We spent over 3 hours walking and taking photos both ways. Then it was time to find a place to stay for the night in Fox Glacier Town... By the time we found a campsite, cooked dinner, showered, refilled and drained the water, charged the car, and went to bed, it was already past noon. 😴🕛
