The vermilion torii gate, symbolizing entry into the realm of the gods, stands beside the World Heritage Center of Mount Fuji. The center cleverly adopts the shape of an inverted Mount Fuji, positioned symmetrically with the torii gate. Its water pool reflects Mount Fuji and the torii gate, creating an entrance to a sacred and surreal world.
Completed in 2017, the Mount Fuji World Heritage Center was designed by Shigeru Ban Architects. The structure features an interwoven wooden design resembling a traditional straw hat. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the warmth and fragrance of wood. Shigeru Ban is also known for designing the Tainan Art Museum Building 2 and his iconic Paper Church.
Why visit? The Mount Fuji World Heritage Center offers a unique and immersive experience. The exhibition is arranged across seven zones, simulating the journey of climbing Mount Fuji. Visitors ascend gradually from the ground floor, experiencing the landscapes of the mountain’s base, midsection, and summit. The exhibition incorporates historical, religious, and seasonal elements through sound and light projections, making it feel like a condensed Mount Fuji climb.
The rooftop observation deck is ingeniously designed. On clear days, Mount Fuji is reflected on the floor, creating a stunning view of two Mount Fujis. Additionally, the theater showcases various chapters of Mount Fuji’s story, leaving visitors with a sense of fulfillment. Remarkably, the entrance fee is only 300 yen, making it highly affordable.
After exploring the center, visitors can browse the souvenir shop or relax at the café on the ground floor. Nearby, the Omiya Yokocho area offers local specialties like fried noodles and Mount Fuji-themed ice cream, completing the Mount Fuji experience.
