Hakata Millennium Gate is an important welcoming gate to Hakata Temples and Shrines. It was built in 2014 by local residents, enterprises and the government, and symbolizes the entrance to Hakata's history and culture. This wooden four-legged gate imitates the "Tsujidoguchi Gate" of the Edo period, and presents the style of medieval Hakata temples and shrines with a kirizumamoto tile structure. The door is made of "Millennium Camphor" donated by Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is a thousand-year-old tree. The fence is carved with Hakata weaving offering patterns, and the details show the beauty of local craftsmanship.
After passing through the Hakata Millennium Gate, you can enter Jotenji-dori and Temples and Shrines. The street design here is clever, with the road symbolizing a gurgling stream, the trail like a riverside trail, and the Jotenji Stone Mat Alley like a stone bridge across the stream. This area is home to many historic Buddhist temples and shrines, such as Jotenji Temple, Tochoji Temple, and Shofukuji Temple. The alleys are quiet and elegant, and it is a rare ancient charm area in the center of Fukuoka City.
Hakata Old City Street not only has temples, shrines, historical sites and stone roads, but is also adjacent to the popular Kawabata Shopping Street and traditional craft museums such as Hakata Weaving and Hakata Dolls. Travelers can deeply experience the thousand-year cultural heritage of Hakata and experience the harmonious coexistence of the city and history.
