Genoa is packed with history, art, culture, and, of course, food. It's a city that was once a powerful maritime republic, and you can still see traces of it as you wander around.
Genoa is a city of overwhelming charm, squeezed between the mountains and the sea, its past like a crossroads of different people and cultures that various poets, writers and songwriters have told. What to see in Genoa? A mini-guide of tourists' favourite points of interest:
The Genoa Aquarium, the city's main tourist attraction, is the largest aquarium in Italy and the second largest in Europe after the one in Valencia, a perfect destination for young and old. Once out, you can only stroll around Genoa's Old Port, home to cultural, tourist, musical and sporting events: it is well worth a stop.
Please walk Around the Centro Storico (Old Town)
Centro Storico is Genoa’s Historical neighborhood. Walking through the medieval narrow streets (Caruggi) will allow you to experience the city’s charm, with its bustling markets and daily life.
While you’re in the area of Via Garibaldi and the Rolli Palaces, make the 3-minute walk to the elevator that whisks you up to Spianata Castelletto. (On Google Maps, search for “Ascensore Castelletto Levante, Piazza del Portello.”)
Once at the top, you’ll have breathtaking views over the city, the port of Genoa, and the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea. You can also wander around a bit in the Castelleto neighborhood if you’d like to stroll or want a gelato.
