Penang | Shi De Tang Xie Gongsi, the oldest century-old clan temple in Malaysia

#AprilGoodDestinations2025

The Shi De Tang Xie Gongsi is the ancestral temple of one of the five major surnames in Penang. It was built in the 19th century with carved beams and painted rafters, integrating Malay, Straits Chinese and European design elements.

The entrance ticket is RM12. What comes into view is a green lawn. In front of it stand two classical buildings, one is a clan temple and the other is a museum converted from an ancient building.

Although Shide Hall is a clan temple, it feels more like a small community, with a school, kitchen and accommodation areas. One can imagine the prosperous days in the past when people came and went. Another thing worth seeing is that in front of the Xie Company Temple, Western stone lions have replaced Chinese stone lions, changing the traditional auspicious animal decoration, which is very unique.
