Mainland Travel | Must-Visit in Tibet: Yamdrok Lake (Yanghu)

Yamdrok Lake, also known by several names such as "Yumu Lake," "Baidi Lake," and "Yamuluk Lake," holds significant meaning in Tibetan culture. In Tibetan, "Yumu" translates to "Swan Lake," earning the name "Baidi Lake" due to its proximity to Baidi. "Yamdrok" refers to "Upper Pasture," "Yong" means "Jade," and "Tso" signifies "Lake." Together, they form "Upper Pasture Jade Lake," commonly abbreviated as "Yanghu" in Chinese.

As the fifth-largest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Yamdrok Lake is the largest inland "slightly salty water lake" in southern Tibet. Alongside Namtso and Mapam Yumtso, it is one of Tibet's three sacred lakes. Located just 100 kilometers from Lhasa city, it is a popular choice for nearby excursions, with a driving time of approximately 2.5 hours.

Since there is no public transportation to Yamdrok Lake, visitors can opt for group tours or private car rentals. Regarding entrance fees, the No. 1 Yamdrok Lake Viewing Platform costs 60 RMB, Langbuqi Viewing Platform parking fee is 5 RMB, Dituo Temple entrance fee is 20 RMB, and Karola Glacier entrance fee is 50 RMB. For those looking to avoid the hassle of an early start, a half-day tour of Yamdrok Lake is a great option. Departing at noon and returning to Lhasa by evening allows for a relaxed experience of the lake's stunning scenery.
