The Dafo Ancient Temple is located in Yuexiu District, on the west side of Beijing Road and directly south of Guangzhou Department Store.
The main hall in the temple faces north and south, with a construction area of 1,200 square meters. It is still the largest in Lingnan. Although it has been eroded by wind and rain for more than 300 years, its style still exists.
On both sides of the main hall, the Weituo Hall, the Jialan Hall, the Buddha Realm, and the east and west gates of the Zen Forest were built. At this time, the scope of the temple expanded, Buddhist affairs flourished, and its reputation spread far and wide, becoming one of the five major jungles in Guangzhou.
In 1981, Master Guangming, vice president of the Guangzhou Buddhist Association, became the abbot and started to rebuild. After efforts, the main hall was restored to its original appearance, and the three large bronze Buddha statues were also recast, each 6 meters high and weighing 10 tons. The number of tourists and pilgrims from home and abroad who come to visit and worship Buddha is increasing day by day.
In September 2000, the Dafo Temple established the first modern Buddhist library open to the public in the province. The library covers an area of 664 square meters, with air conditioning installed in all rooms and modern computer management. At present, the collection of books has reached more than 8,000 kinds and more than 40,000 volumes. The library is divided into six parts: reading room, electronic reading room, information room, scripture room, audio-visual room, and circulation department.
