Background
Seoul Grand Park Botanical Garden, opened in 1985, is the first public arboretum in Seoul and lies at the foot of Mount Cheonggyesan. It spans about 22.3 hectares, with its facilities including a large greenhouse (2,825 m²), plant specimen exhibition hall, propagation and cultivation buildings, and outdoor theme gardens with roses, hydrangeas, and seasonal flower displays. It showcases over 1,200 plant species (with many tens of thousands of individual plants) both within its exhibition greenhouse and in outdoor gardens.
Why It’s Worth Visiting
• The indoor greenhouse is divided into multiple pavilions (Desert, Tropical, Warm temperature, Carnivorous plant etc.), each offering distinct climate zones and rare plant species to explore.
• Outdoor gardens are equally beautiful: seasonal flower beds, a rose garden, hydrangea paths, Sculptures in the grounds, and themed areas that attract butterflies and birds.
• Beyond just sightseeing, the garden supports conservation, research, and education, with a plant specimen hall, botanical library, and ongoing plant propagation and preservation efforts.
My Impression
Walking through the greenhouse felt like stepping into another world—lush air, vivid greenery, bursts of color from tropical flowers, the drama of desert plants and the curiosity of carnivorous species. Outside, the changing light on the rose garden or the hydrangea-lined paths added a sense of time and seasonal rhythm. It’s a place where beauty and calm coexist with learning, and where every turn brings something quietly impressive.
