🏛️ Time Travel in Hakodate: Old Public Hall & Motomachi Park Stroll

Visiting the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward felt like stepping into a different era—one where East met West with charm and grace. The building itself is striking even from a distance, with its pale blue and yellow facade, perched on a small hill overlooking the harbor. It’s easy to imagine the important gatherings that once took place here, from dignitaries to diplomats, in those grand Western-style rooms with high ceilings and elegant furnishings.
I took my time walking through the hall. There’s something deeply nostalgic about creaky wooden floors, antique chandeliers, and wide verandas that frame picture-perfect views of Hakodate Bay. You can rent period costumes here and take photos inside—I didn’t do that, but I saw a few couples really getting into it, and it added to the atmosphere.
Just steps away is Motomachi Park, and that’s where I lingered a little longer. The park isn’t big, but it has a timeless quality—neatly landscaped paths, benches shaded by trees, and a slow, easy energy. Locals were sitting quietly, some reading, some just enjoying the sea breeze. From certain points, you get postcard views of the city and harbor below. It’s one of those places that invites you to sit, breathe, and just take it all in.
What I loved most about this area was the mix of cultures and history, all within walking distance. Western-style architecture, Japanese tradition, and a quiet community feel—it’s not loud or flashy, but it leaves a strong impression.
