[Hakodate] Trappistine Monastery

Our visit to Our Lady of the Angels Trappistine Abbey in Hakodate was one of the more serene highlights of our trip. Nestled in a quiet part of town, the abbey gave off a peaceful, almost sacred vibe the moment we stepped onto its grounds. Surrounded by greenery and perfectly trimmed gardens, the red-brick European-style building looked like something out of a storybook.
The chapel was closed to the public, but the exterior alone was stunning and calming. We took our time strolling around, soaking in the silence—it felt like a gentle pause from the usual travel bustle. There’s a small shop run by the nuns where you can buy handmade cookies, jams, and butter—simple, humble offerings that felt meaningful.
It wasn’t a long stop, but definitely a worthwhile one if you’re in Hakodate and want to slow down and experience a different, more contemplative side of the city.
