Trappistine Monastery in Hakodate, Hokkaido

Founded in 1898 by eight nuns sent from France, the Trappistine Monastery is Japan's first convent. Its brick architecture gives visitors the illusion of being in a foreign land. The contrast between the beautiful buildings and the surrounding nature is truly stunning.

The current chapel was rebuilt in 1927, but its blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles remains a highlight. Statues such as the Archangel Saint Michael and the Compassionate Virgin Mary feature gentle expressions, as if warmly welcoming visitors.
