This time, I stayed at the Kawakujō Hotel in Hakone, and it was the perfect choice for relaxation and rejuvenation. The trip mainly revolved around the Hakone hot spring area, and the hotel's biggest selling point is its convenient location—just a 5 to 15-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station. It's ideal for people like me who want quick and easy access to transportation. Even with luggage, it's no hassle, and you can immediately start your delightful onsen journey upon arrival.
The hotel's location is incredibly convenient. Right downstairs is the onsen street, with small shops selling local specialties and snacks. There's also a bus stop nearby, making it easy to plan your itinerary. Nearby attractions include the Hakone Museum of Art, old streets, and scenic mountain views, perfect for leisurely exploration. Notably, Kawakujō Hotel is quite large and primarily caters to international tourists. The staff speaks good English, so communication is stress-free.
The onsen facilities are diverse, with clear distinctions between outdoor and indoor areas. The outdoor baths include natural stone pools, small private pools suitable for individuals or couples, and larger communal pools for groups of friends to enjoy together. The views are great, allowing you to admire the Hakone mountain scenery and relax your mind. This time, my room even had a private onsen, perfect for a quiet spa experience with your partner.
As for food, the hotel offers a one-night, two-meal plan. Both breakfast and dinner are abundant and more thoughtfully prepared than many modern onsen inns. The dishes are diverse and made with fresh ingredients. Dinner includes seafood sashimi, wagyu beef, grilled items, and more, while breakfast offers both Japanese and Western options. The rooms come in both tatami and Western-style bed options, blending traditional charm with elegance. The room sizes are spacious, with a large living area, making them ideal for families or friends.
In terms of cleanliness, the hotel is generally tidy and well-maintained, and the staff is very friendly. However, some guests have mentioned that certain room facilities are a bit outdated and not fully upgraded. If this is a concern, make sure to check the room type carefully when booking. The room I booked seemed to have been upgraded.
The best part is that the onsen area is never overcrowded, so you can choose your favorite pool and soak at any time without waiting. After a day of activities, you can unwind completely in the onsen. The staff's English proficiency makes it easy to ask for directions or book transportation, and the check-in and check-out processes are smooth.
Travel Tips: Arrive early to check in, enjoy the onsen, and then go for a stroll. Allocate enough time for dinner to savor the delicious food, and after breakfast, visit nearby attractions like Hakone Shrine or take a boat ride on Lake Ashi. For a quieter experience, choose a room with a private onsen to enjoy your own space.
Booking Tips: During peak seasons, it's recommended to book early and opt for meal-inclusive plans. If you're concerned about older room types, check for newly renovated rooms and confirm if they have private onsen facilities. Note that the hotel attracts many international guests, which makes communication easier but also gives the place a more global atmosphere. If you prefer a local vibe, consider this when booking.
City Notes: Hakone's weather changes quickly, so check the forecast and bring appropriate clothing. After bathing in the onsen, remember to stay hydrated. For hiking spots, wear proper hiking shoes, and don't miss out on the area's limited-edition local delicacies.
