This 3 km walking route starts from Wuliu Alley, where you can experience the charm of the ancient Jiangnan region. Wuliu Alley retains the atmosphere of old Hangzhou life. It is recommended to take Water Bus Line 7 from the Bazibridge Ferry Terminal near the Baoshan Bridge subway station and enjoy the canal scenery along the way. The red walls and bamboo shadows of Deshou Palace, the former residence of Emperor Gaozong in his later years, make a perfect backdrop for photos, exuding a royal atmosphere.
Continue to Hu Xueyan's Former Residence, the mansion of the richest man in the late Qing Dynasty. This residence showcases the essence of Jiangnan gardens, where rockeries, pavilions, and ponds complement each other. Stroll along Shiwu Kui Alley, and near the Balkan Hostel, you can capture the ancient and modern dialogue between Wangxiang Pavilion and the old alley. Ascend Wangxiang Pavilion for a panoramic view of Southern Song Dynasty Royal Street, which evokes a dreamlike ambiance, especially when the lights come on.
Finally, arrive at the bustling Hefang Street, where you can find traditional handicrafts and authentic Hangzhou snacks. The entire tour takes about 3–4 hours, offering a taste of history without being too tiring, perfect for travelers seeking a relaxing experience of Hangzhou's ancient charm. Remember to bring your camera, as there are picturesque spots all along the way.
