The Former Residence of Hu Xueyan in Hangzhou is a magnificent architectural monument from the late Qing Dynasty, known as the "First Luxurious Mansion South of the Yangtze." Built in the 1870s by the famous "Red Hat Merchant," the residence impresses with its grandeur and opulent decor. Visitors can admire exquisite carvings made of wood, stone, and brick, luxurious halls furnished with expensive hardwood furniture, and the picturesque Zhiyuan Garden featuring artificial grottoes and pavilions. The mansion serves as a vivid illustration of the rise and fall of its owner: from immense wealth, Hu Xueyan fell into bankruptcy within just a few years. Today, this architectural complex, recognized as a national heritage site, offers visitors not only the chance to appreciate the craftsmanship of old masters but also to reflect on the fleeting nature of earthly glory and wealth.
