Stepping into Hu Xueyan's Former Residence for the third time, this mansion that witnessed the legendary life of the "merchant with the red cap" remains impressive. At the entrance of Zhiyuan Garden, the exquisite layout and layered spatial design instantly transport visitors to that turbulent era. This garden, which blends the elegance of southern Jiangnan style with the grandeur of northern architecture, is considered a masterpiece of late Qing Dynasty architectural art.
Strolling through the garden, every scene deserves careful appreciation. The rockeries create a natural artistic conception, ponds reflect the pavilions and towers, and winding paths reveal hidden craftsmanship. Compared to Suzhou's Humble Administrator's Garden, the spatial arrangement here shows more depth, with more luxurious details. Most impressive is how this mansion perfectly displays the aesthetic pursuits of a wealthy merchant, combining both scholarly elegance and commercial grandeur.
For photography, early morning or dusk is recommended when soft light enhances the building's charm. Wearing modern Chinese-style clothing while standing in front of the Hundred Lions Tower, or walking along the winding corridors, creates photos with classical beauty. Particularly recommended is taking pictures in front of the latticed flower walls - looking through the intricate carvings feels like traveling through time.
Transportation is very convenient, just a ten-minute walk from Jiangcheng Road subway station. Allow two hours to explore and absorb the historical stories this mansion tells. The ticket price is reasonable, and detailed information boards throughout the garden help visitors better understand the artistic value of this architecture.
