A must-see in Hanoi! The Temple of Literature, a Confucian temple in Hanoi.

#October Travel Grant

The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu) in Hanoi, built in 1070, is Vietnam's first Confucian temple, dedicated to Confucius and other Confucian scholars. From 1076 to 1779, it housed the Quốc Tử Giám, Vietnam's first national university, serving as a center of learning and education.

The Temple of Literature consists of five courtyards, with the central passageway reserved exclusively for the king, demonstrating a strict hierarchy. Within the grounds, 82 steles (steles inscribed with the names of successful candidates in the state examination) are preserved, offering a glimpse into the depth of Confucian culture and educational traditions. In particular, the Khuê Van Các Pavilion, a symbol of the beauty of traditional Vietnamese architecture and the spirit of scholarship, is one of Hanoi's iconic landmarks.

📍Address: 58 Quốc Tử Giám, Văn Miếu, Đống Đa, Hà Nội, Vietnam
