Located on Miyajima Island off the west coast of Hiroshima, Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Japan. The shrine and the Great Bird Gate (Otori) on top of it are among the most famous cultural and natural landmarks in Japan.
The Great Bird Gate, also known as the Floating Torii, is a huge, brightly colored gate that stands slightly below sea level. The gate marks the entrance to Itsukushima Shrine and is considered a symbol of safety and spiritual direction in Japan. At high tide, the gate appears to float on the surface of the water, creating an unforgettable and magical sight.
Itsukushima Shrine itself, built in the 6th century, is built on wooden piers and reflects the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. Dedicated to the sea goddess Ami-no-o, the temple is uniquely positioned for visitors to enjoy the surrounding natural scenery.
A visit to Itsukushima Shrine and the Great Bird Gate is a unique cultural and spiritual experience that combines a contemplation of history with the beauty of nature. This is a great place to experience Japanese art and culture in a magical natural setting. 🌅🌟
