The Gentleman's Fortress: My Solo Visit to Hikone Castle, Shiga

#hellohalloween
Standing serenely on the shores of Lake Biwa, Hikone Castle is a rare and beautiful gem. As one of only five castles designated as a National Treasure, it offers an exceptionally authentic and intimate experience. Unlike the rebuilt giants of Osaka or Nagoya, Hikone's original keep, gates, and turrets have weathered the centuries with grace. For a solo traveler, it's a perfect blend of pristine history, stunning landscape, and peaceful exploration.

My Solo Itinerary:

· Morning – The Original Keep & Panoramic Views: I started by crossing the moat and entering the castle grounds. The climb to the main keep was steep but rewarding. Inside the compact, three-story tower, I admired the original wooden architecture and the clever defensive features. The top floor offered a breathtaking view of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, and the city of Hikone nestled below.
· Afternoon – Strolling the Gardens & Samurai Lore: I spent a leisurely afternoon in the stunning Genkyuen Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden built for the lords of Hikone. With its pond, islands, and teahouses, it was the perfect place for a solo stroll and contemplation. I then visited the Hikone Castle Museum to see the artifacts of the Ii clan, including their famous red-lacquered samurai armor.
· Evening – Lakeside Views & The Castle's Mascot: I took a walk along the shores of Lake Biwa near the castle. Before leaving, I made sure to say hello to Hikonyan, Hikone's beloved samurai cat mascot, who makes appearances throughout the day. I ended my day with a local meal, perhaps some fresh funazushi (fermented carp), a unique Shiga specialty.

Why Hikone Castle is Perfect for Solo Travelers:

· Authentic & Unspoiled: Experiencing a National Treasure castle in its original form is a profound and special experience.
· Compact & Manageable: The castle and garden are close together and can be thoroughly enjoyed in a half-day without feeling rushed.
· Serene & Picturesque: The lakeside setting and elegant garden create a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere.
· Rich in Culture: The combination of castle, garden, and museum provides a deep and well-rounded cultural immersion.

Tips for Your Visit:

· 🚂 Easy Access: Just a 15-minute walk from JR Hikone Station.
· 🎟️ Buy the combined ticket for the castle, Genkyuen Garden, and the museum for the best value.
· 🐱 Check Hikonyan's appearance schedule online if you want to meet the famous cat.
· 🚲 Rent a bicycle at the station to explore the castle, garden, and lakeside promenade with ease.

Hikone Castle is a gentleman's fortress—elegant, resilient, and deeply cultured. It’s a solo destination that offers both historical weight and serene beauty.
