✓ Former Hirosaki City Library
Next to the white and green Aomori Bank stands a striking red and white Western-style building, a symbol of the modern era. Its striking exterior is a true eye-catcher. This is the Former Hirosaki City Library, a representative Western-style building in Hirosaki City.
The striking contrast of its white exterior, red roof, and green window frames creates a striking image. Built to commemorate the victory in the Russo-Japanese War, it was designed by Horie Sakichi, a carpenter employed by the Hirosaki Domain during its administration. The building's distinctive twin towers, with their Renaissance-style foundation and incorporating Japanese influences, create a unique architectural style. The octagonal towers, positioned to the left and right, appeared strikingly modern for their time.
Today, the building is publicly displayed as a historical monument, exhibiting local publications and literary materials. Admission is free.
