Aomori | Hirosaki City Museum: A Great Place to Learn About the History of the Tsugaru Region

✓ Hirosaki City Museum

A must-see while visiting Hirosaki Castle. Located in the Sannomaru area of the castle ruins, the museum systematically collects and displays the history and culture of the Tsugaru region, from prehistoric times to the present day. Tickets are affordable at 300 yen.

The museum building itself is also quite impressive, designed by Kunio Maekawa, a leading figure in Japanese architecture who was a student of the modern master Le Corbusier.

The museum fully depicts how the Tsugaru clan, hailed as heroes of Kanto after the Battle of Sekigahara, evolved from their initial strongholds of Oura Castle and Horikoshi Castle to their ultimate choice of Hirosaki, establishing the magnificent castle we see today.

The exhibits are easily understood, making them enjoyable even for those unfamiliar with Tsugaru history. The museum is small, but a good size for a stroll.
