Hua'an Tulou are a significant component of the Southern Fujian Tulou complex. Sixty-eight of them remain, including Eryi, Nanyang, Dongyang, and Qiyun. The Hua'an Dadi Tulou cluster, represented by Eryi, was officially inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List in July 2008. While relatively few in number, the Hua'an Tulou, with their distinct regional characteristics and exceptional historical, artistic, and scientific value, hold a special and irreplaceable position among Fujian's Tulou.
Here, visitors can not only experience the tulou culture of "balancing public and private interests, and harmony between heaven, earth, and people," but also learn the defense strategies passed down from generation to generation by the tulou residents. They can admire the exquisite architecture, recognized as a World Heritage Site, and enjoy Gaoshan dance performances, a symbol of intangible cultural heritage. The Shangping Tulou Cluster is the earliest tulou cluster in my country with a clearly defined date and is known as the "Birthplace of Fujian Tulou." It primarily comprises Qiyun Tower, the "Mother of Tulous," Rixin Tower, the "Old Summer Palace of Tulous," and Shengping Tower, the "Tulou Blockhouse."

Hua'an Tulou is part of the Fujian Tulou, which are traditional earthen buildings constructed by the Hakka people for defensive purposes. These structures, dating back to the 12th century, are significant due to their unique architectural style and cultural heritage, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hua'an Tulou is located in Hua'an County, Zhangzhou, Fujian. It is accessible by taxi from the nearest train station or by bus from Zhangzhou City. Private tours are also available, offering direct transportation to the site.
The Tulou is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The best times to visit are in the early morning or late afternoon when the crowds are smaller and the lighting is better for photography.
The entrance fee is approximately 80-100 CNY. Tickets can be purchased onsite at the entrance. Some tours may offer ticket packages that include transportation and a guide.
Booking in advance is not required, though it may be helpful during peak tourist seasons or if you are part of a group tour.
It takes about 2-3 hours to fully explore the site, including walking around the Tulou buildings, visiting the local museum, and experiencing the surrounding village.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin, and some tour operators offer English-speaking guides. Audio guides are also available at the entrance.
The best viewpoints are around the perimeter of the Tulou complex, especially from higher ground where you can capture the full scale of these massive earthen buildings. The natural landscape surrounding the site offers great opportunities for photography as well.
Start by exploring the largest Tulou building and then visit the smaller ones nearby. Take your time to appreciate the architecture and cultural significance. Don’t miss the museum for a deeper understanding of the site’s history.
Night visits or light shows are not typically offered at Hua'an Tulou. However, the area is still beautiful in the early evening, with sunset providing a nice backdrop for photography.
The site can be crowded on weekends and during national holidays. Weekdays, especially in the morning or late afternoon, are the least crowded times to visit.
There are toilets, rest areas, and food stalls offering local snacks. Water and other refreshments are also available at small shops around the site.
The site is relatively accessible, but there may be some uneven terrain around the Tulou buildings. Elderly and disabled visitors might find the walking difficult, especially if exploring the surrounding area.
Cash is widely accepted, and mobile payments (like WeChat Pay and Alipay) are commonly used. Some smaller vendors may only accept cash.
There are small local restaurants and food stalls near the Tulou offering traditional Fujian dishes such as Hakka-style braised pork and rice dumplings.
Vegetarian food is available at some local eateries, though options may be limited. Halal food is not commonly found in this area.
There are a few hotels and guesthouses in the nearby town of Hua'an, offering budget and mid-range accommodations. For a more unique experience, some visitors opt to stay in local Hakka-style inns.
Souvenir shops sell local handicrafts, tea, and small Hakka-inspired souvenirs such as pottery and woven items.
Taxis or private cars are the most convenient options to continue your trip. Buses are available to nearby towns and attractions, but taxis provide more flexibility.
