Okunoin Temple, located in Koyasan, Wakayama Prefecture, is the place of meditation for Kukai (Kobo Daishi), the founder of Shingon Buddhism. It is considered one of Japan's most sacred Buddhist sites. Legend has it that Kukai entered meditation here in 835 AD, and believers believe he continues to practice there today. Therefore, Okunoin Temple is considered a spiritual place.
The approach to Okunoin Temple is approximately two kilometers long, lined with centuries-old cedar trees and over 200,000 tombstones and pagodas. From military commanders and feudal lords to modern entrepreneurs, these tombs have been built here, seeking the protection of the master. The illuminated approach at night adds to the solemn and mysterious atmosphere.
The heart of Okunoin Temple is the Lantern Hall (Tōmeido) and the Kukai Goshrine (Kūkai Goshrine). Two "eternal lamps" within the Lantern Hall have burned for centuries, symbolizing the immortality of the Dharma and the everlasting presence of the master. The shrine is the central sanctuary for Kukai worshippers. Worshipers are required to wash their hands and bow before the shrine as a sign of the highest respect.
Okunoin is not only a religious site but also a place where nature, history, and faith blend, offering visitors a sense of solemnity and tranquility. It is known as "Japan's Spiritual Place."
