Built in 1611, the Hirosaki Castle Keep is one of the few remaining Edo-period keeps in the Tohoku region and a symbol of Hirosaki. Although modest in size, its well-preserved structure, combined with the surrounding moat, cherry blossoms, and the backdrop of Mount Iwaki, makes it a highly iconic historical site.
Currently, the keep has been relocated and its foundation is being repaired as part of a stone wall restoration project. The keep is temporarily displayed on a platform within the castle grounds instead of its original position atop the stone wall by the moat. This extensive project is expected to take several years, offering a rare opportunity to witness the "moving keep," which has become a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts.
🚶♀️ During spring, when cherry blossoms bloom in Hirosaki Park, the keep framed by pink blossoms creates a dreamy scene. In summer, it is surrounded by lush greenery; in autumn, it is adorned with vibrant fall foliage; and in winter, it stands beautifully amidst the snow, making it a captivating destination year-round.
