In the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, the blue moon grass that Himmel wanted to show Frieren on their journey to defeat the Demon King only blooms for her to see 26 years after Himmel’s death.
This flower — almost a central symbol in the anime — is inspired by the real-life baby blue eyes flower (also known as Nemophila). Its meanings — hope, courage, and forgiveness — perfectly mirror the essence of the brave hero Himmel himself.
Best Viewing Season: Mid-April to early May — which also overlaps with cherry blossom season.
If the cherry blossom spots are too crowded, why not take a peaceful detour to see these gentle blue blooms instead?
Here’s a spot to add to your spring flower trip map:
Hitachi Seaside Park, Ibaraki
Only about a 2-hour drive from Tokyo, this park becomes a dreamy sea of blue from April to May with over 5 million Nemophila flowers carpeting the hills.
During flower season, they even offer a limited edition blue ice cream in the park!
Access: Take the JR Joban Line to Katsuta Station, then a 20-minute bus ride
Admission: ¥450 (extra fee may apply during peak flower season)
